Enterprise Messaging Is Fragmented by Design

Every enterprise with customer-facing communication ends up with a messaging stack that looks like this: one vendor for SMS, another for WhatsApp, a third for email, and a fourth for voice. Each vendor has a different API, different delivery semantics, and different pricing models. Switching costs are high. Integration maintenance is constant.

The Contexa experiment is exploring whether a vendor-neutral orchestration layer can solve this. The core idea: a single API that normalises all CPaaS providers behind a unified interface. Messages are routed intelligently based on cost, deliverability, and channel preference — not vendor lock-in.

The architecture challenge is substantial. Each messaging channel has fundamentally different delivery guarantees. SMS is fire-and-forget with carrier-dependent delivery reports. WhatsApp has session windows and template approval processes. Email has bounce handling and reputation management. Voice has call state machines. Abstracting these behind a single API without losing channel-specific capabilities is the central design problem.

The research suggests that the market is ready for this. Mid-size enterprises spend 15-25% of their messaging budget on integration maintenance alone. The opportunity isn't in replacing CPaaS providers — it's in sitting between the enterprise and its providers, optimising routing and reducing vendor dependency.
